Over all review
Uttama Villain" is a 2015 Indian Tamil-language comedy-drama film directed by Ramesh Aravind and written by Kamal Haasan. The film stars Kamal Haasan in the lead role, with a supporting cast including K. Balachander, K. Vishwanath, Andrea Jeremiah, Pooja Kumar, Nassar, and Parvathy Nair.
The film tells the story of an aging superstar actor, Manoranjan (Kamal Haasan), who is diagnosed with a terminal illness and has only a few months to live. Despite his deteriorating health, he decides to perform in a play that he has written, which he believes will be his legacy.
The film is divided into two parts - the first half focuses on Manoranjan's personal life and his relationships with the people around him, while the second half is a retelling of a play that he has written, which is set in the 8th century and revolves around a Buddhist monk, Uttaman (Kamal Haasan), who is known for his wit and wisdom.
In the first half of the film, Manoranjan is shown as a successful actor who is loved by his fans but has a troubled personal life. He is separated from his wife, Varalakshmi (Urvasi), who is a stage actor herself and has a strained relationship with his daughter, Manonmani (Parvathy Nair), who is a drug addict. Manoranjan is also revealed to have had a troubled childhood, with a mother who committed suicide and a father who was an alcoholic.
Manoranjan is diagnosed with brain cancer and is told that he has only a few months to live. Despite this, he decides to go ahead with a play that he has written, which he believes will be his legacy. He seeks the help of his mentor, Margadarsi (K. Balachander), who is a renowned theatre director, to direct the play.
In the second half of the film, the play that Manoranjan has written is performed, which is set in the 8th century and revolves around a Buddhist monk, Uttaman (Kamal Haasan), who is known for his wit and wisdom. The play is a retelling of the story of Uttaman, who is falsely accused of a crime and is sentenced to death. Uttaman uses his wit and wisdom to outsmart his captors and ultimately wins his freedom.
As the play progresses, the lines between Manoranjan's real-life and the play start to blur, and he begins to draw parallels between Uttaman's life and his own. The play becomes a reflection of Manoranjan's own struggles and challenges, and he begins to find solace and meaning in his own life through the characters he has created.
The film ends with Manoranjan's death, but his legacy lives on through the play he has written, which becomes a critical and commercial success. The film concludes with a voiceover by Kamal Haasan, in which he talks about the importance of leaving a legacy and the power of storytelling.
Despite the film's initial commercial failure, "Uttama Villain" received critical acclaim for its unique storyline, Kamal Haasan's performance, and the film's technical aspects. It has since gained a cult following and is regarded as one of Kamal Haasan's most underrated films.
